Mortgage payment deferrals offered due to the Covid-19 Pandemic

As mortgage payments have become extremely difficult to repay for those who have lost their jobs, more and more Canadians have chosen to use their mortgage deferral assistance.

However, a mortgage deferral may not be as simple as it sounds; it is not free and the interest charged can vary according to the deferral you have chosen.

Why isn’t It free? This is because all a deferral does is pause mortgage payments and not the interest that continues to accumulate.  In the long run all this does is cause your future payments to increase.

As for the total additional sum that a deferral will cost all depends on the deferral time you have chosen. The more time off you take, the more expensive it is going to be.
